Hot historical romance times three!
In Becoming Lady Thomas,, Elisabeth has fallen in love with the neighbor boy and they have plans to marry. However, he and her sister go off to university and their courtship is put on hold for four years. When he returns, they expect to pick up where they left off, but due to unforeseen circumstances, and the possessive glance of a nobleman, plans change and Lissa is set to marry someone else. At first resistant, which was completely understandable, Jasper's patience, determination, and outright sexiness ultimately wore her down and she soon realized that her happily ever after was always with him. With a bit of drama and a lot of hot moments, this story was deliciously entertaining. In Becoming Countess Dumont, I didn't expect to like it. I had already learned to hate Elisabeth's sister, Edith, in the previous book after her disgusting betrayal and had little hope that she'd be able to redeem herself in my eyes. No doubt, this girl was a hoe. She was cunning and manipulative and came off as heartless. But really, she was looking for someone to love her. Even her lack of loyalty for her sister came down to a search for someone to care for her. When Jasper's best friend offers her a marriage of convenience, a relationship in name only, she jumps at the chance to better her station. For six months, they still haven't consummated their marriage and have taken lovers. One bad encounter has them both opening their eyes to what could be between them and I got to see another side to Edith and while I still didn't like her, I wasn't actively hating her either. The author made me enjoy the intimacy that developed between Edith and Alexander and I couldn't resist a few chuckles at their banter. Even when they were being antagonistic towards each other, I was charmed and in the end I found myself smiling at this story. Go figure!
In Becoming Mrs. Benedict, Alexander's younger brother gets his own shot at love with Ella, who is the baby sister of Elisabeth and Edith. This story was a lot darker than the first two and went down a path I wasn't expecting. Ella is very much alone, taking care of her dying father, and living out some silly fantasies in her mind. She even romanticizes the man who professed his love for Lissa and ended up sleeping with Edith. Why she thought this guy was marriage material was beyond me, but I guess it fed into the mania of this story. William is very much a villain and her juvenile idol worship is no more. Ella is forced to make some hard choices and they scar her. However, the love of a good man, Alcott, just might be the medicine to heal her broken soul. I loved how the author didn't have them just jump into anything so soon after 'the ordeal'. Everything flowed organically and watching these two navigate their way to true love was so worthwhile. This story ended up competing for first place in my heart when it comes to this series and won by a landslide. Who doesn't love a dashing hero and a slightly unhinged, not such a damsel at all, heroine?
