Synopsis
I’ve let my traumatic past shape my future by becoming a protective agent. I don’t report to anyone. I’m the person you phone when you’re all out of options. I’m the one you turn to when you’re being devoured by desperation. I’m your last option and only hope of seeing your loved one alive again. I’m the man who will walk into a blazing inferno to find a kidnapped victim, because I have nothing to lose but so much to atone for.
She’s kept in a container, waiting for her death sentence to be carried out. She’s just another job, until I break my own rules and take her in. I tell myself it’s because she has no one. It’s only for a year. I’ll teach her how to become a ghost, so those who are after her won’t find her again.
It’s all lies.
I’ve lived a hard and unforgiving life. But then she comes and she gives me a reason to do more than just exist. This fragile woman gives me purpose. She’s so beautifully broken and it makes me want to keep her.
Brought together by our scars, we have to fight to free Cara from the sins of her father that haunts her every step.
But the past won’t let go easily, it will do whatever it takes to tear us apart.
This is the story of a woman’s fight for survival, of unspeakable cruelty, unconditional love, and the only man who can save her.
Review
I read the blurb, I'm familiar with the author, and so I dove right in. I expected lots of darkness and depravity and, in the beginning, the author did not disappoint. It was graphic and disgusting, turning my stomach and keeping me glued to the pages. But then the intensity kind of fell off and I was left with a story that had more of a contemporary feel than a suspenseful one.
So let's recap the story... Girl is out with her parents on a beautiful day, appreciating time spent with her family, and then everything turns scary. She winds up in the hospital, learns her parents are dead, her uncle gives her fake papers and sends her out of the country. She only knows that someone is after her, but not why. Seven years go by with her moving from small town to small town, without forming any attachments, and she starts feeling the itch to move again. Too late, she's captured and tortured and about to die when she's saved. Predator comes through, rescues the girl, kills her captors, and takes her to safety. Trying to stay one step ahead of the bad guys isn't easy when the girl is traumatized and scared, but he's unwilling to let her go. While not really romantic, this story was still entertaining.
I've tried and tried and tried this author and I don't have any plans of giving up. Her work always has a note that draws me in and I'm sure that won't stop any time soon. So while this particular story didn't completely blow me away, I'll patiently wait for the one that will.
