The Beast, Rapunzel & Robin Hood, and Queen of the Night

July 09, 2023

I'm a huge fan of retellings, so I went on a binge and here are the results. Hopefully you find something to fall in love with!

The Beast (Monsters & Beauties #1) by Jenika Snow

My Rating - ★★★
Genre - Paranormal Romance
POV - Dual 1st person
Heat - 5 out of 5
Length - 122 pages
Find the blurb here - https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/61068458

A Beauty and the Beast retelling ~ What if the Beast that Belle fell in love with never turned into the handsome prince? Well, you get this incredibly filthy retelling of a monster who is determined to claim his beauty. I was very entertained by the naughty bits, how these characters maneuvered their different parts to mesh so well, and the happy ending that every kind monster deserves.

Rapunzel & Robin Hood (Twisting Fairytales #1) by Jessica Erin

My Rating - ★★★
Genre - Fantasy Romance
POV - Dual 1st person
Heat - 3 out of 5
Length - 304 pages
Find the blurb here - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/61025453-rapunzel-robin-hood

A twisted and screwed retelling ~ I’m a huge fan of retellings and this one had a unique premise. Imagine if Rapunzel ended up with a different guy. And instead of being in the tower because of the witch, Mother Gothel, but because of another source. This mashup was totally unexpected and it worked. It was a bit corny, super sweet, and even during the dark moments, so much light shone through that I didn’t really feel the angst. This was a very easy read and I think I’m in for some very cute surprises as the series continues.

Queen of the Night by Elizabeth Muse

My Rating - ★★★
Genre - Paranormal Romance
POV - Dual 1st person
Heat - 3 out of 5
Length - 142 pages
Find the blurb here - https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/59697307

A Little Red Riding Hood retelling ~ I must admit, although I found myself frustrated with this story, I couldn’t stop reading. This author sure can write and grab my attention. The heroine, Francis, was a petulant brat for most of this book, but by the end I came to finally like her. As for Charlie, he was a seemingly unkillable werewolf enforcer for the mob, who was also a Beta and a consigliere. See that right there? That confusion… that was me! I didn’t really understand the motives for most of this story except for how Francis’s brother died, and that scene was A LOT. Probably the best scene out of the book because it was all there. I didn’t have to question anything because it was all laid out for me. As for the rest of the book, I’m still unclear how Francis’s dad is the Alpha, yet she’s human and she also rules them all. But clearly I enjoyed this story well enough.

Hello hello and welcome to another recap!

Can I tell you how surprised I am by not only how much I read in June, but how many of those books were worthy of all the stars??? Why can't every month be like this? I'm hoping and praying that July is just as grand!!

I'm so excited for the new chapters my daughters will face. One will be starting high school, one will be starting university, and one will be finishing her last year of university. I'm so proud of my girls!!

Okay so back to all the books. My June reading was as follows...

My Two Cents

When I picked this book up, I had no idea what I was in for… AND I LOVED IT!! This author has found a new fan in me and after reading A Court of Sugar and Spice, I’ll never look at the Nutcracker or the Sugar Plum Faerie the same!

I walked into a world of magic, with mythical creatures, dangerous terrain, and tons of adventure. The author captured the feeling and wonder of this world perfectly. I could easily imagine the impossible trees and valleys, Fin’s infamous candies and bombs, the beauty that surrounded these characters.

Sorry for being vague, but I truly believe that the plot of this story needs to be experienced rather than told. It’s sexy, fun, charming, and full of love. There happens to be another book involving Clara and Fin and I’m excited to read it!

My Two Cents

Rebecca F. Kenney writes spicy fantasy romance about sassy, strong women and hot guys with tragic backstories... pirates, warlords, demons, Fae, and royals. She has also written a zombie-apocalypse/vampire-romance trilogy (book 1 is "The Vampires Will Save You"). She was the first rule I ever broke.
She’ll be the last.

In the beginning, there was Savannah Shaw.
Teasing me with a mischievous, merciless grin by day.
Crawling through my window with tear-stained cheeks by night.

I was ordered to avoid her.
Lectured on her misdeeds.
Forbidden from seeing her.
But my need to protect her was innate.
So natural I never questioned it.
So visceral I couldn’t fight it.

She was the first rule I ever broke, and it’s why I lost her the first time.

Now, out of nowhere, there is Sav Loveless.
World famous frontwoman for The Hometown Heartless,
Hollywood’s newest up-and-coming film star,
and my daughter’s idol.

Her reputation for trouble precedes her,
but the celebrity who sets foot in my small town is no longer a girl in need of protection.
She’s a woman who has saved herself,
and this time, it’s my life that’s falling apart.

Maintaining the distance between us is imperative,
but everything about her pulls at every part of me.
My need to touch her clouds my logic.
My need to have her, to own her, to love her.

She’ll be the last rule I ever break,
but this time, it will be to keep her.

Between Never and Forever by Brit Benson

My Two Cents

I've found a new author to follow and I blame Jessica @Chatterbooksbookblog. If it weren't for her spectacular review, I wouldn't be typing this up.

Savannah and Levi grew up together. Both of their lives were full of torment and they were each other's only true comfort. They were friends and loved each other before they even knew what love was. And when circumstances separated them, that love continued to beat within their hearts, not allowing anyone else to touch it.

Fastforward and now Levi's a widower with a child and Savannah is an infamous rock star. Circumstances once again forced them into each other's orbit and after a thankfully brief time of miscommunication, these two found their way back to each other. There were plenty of hurdles and obstacles that they had to leap and punch their way through, but it was incredibly easy to root for these two.

I loved that the author didn't shy away from sharing Savannah's addiction and how it was wrecking not only her life, but those around her. I felt proud and hopeful of the woman she was becoming and that's all because of this author's writing. It was easy to be a little imp on this character's shoulder, egging her on, supporting her, shouting NO, and celebrating every one of her triumphs. I couldn't be more pleased with the way this story played out.

I'm not even going to get started on how much I loved the dynamic between Levi, Boss and Savannah. Throw in Sharon and the love growing between all of these characters, including the members of the band... so sweet!

So yeah, I'll be keeping a keen eye on this author's releases because if they're anything like this one, they're going to be amazing.

Between Never and Forever by Brit Benson

The Author

Brit Benson writes real, relatable romance novels that depict epic love. She likes outspoken, independent heroines, dirty-talking, love-struck heroes, and plots that tug on every emotion.

Brit would almost always rather be reading or writing. When she’s not dreaming up her next swoony book boyfriend and fierce book bestie, she’s getting lost in someone else’s fictional world. When she’s not doing that, she’s probably marathoning a Netflix series or wandering aimlessly up and down the aisles in Homegoods, sniffing candles and touching things she’ll never buy.

Brit currently resides somewhere near the Blue Ridge Parkway with her husband, daughters, dogs, and an obscene number of books.

Throwback Thursday // Books I Didn't Read in 2020 (but should have)

June 29, 2023

Hello and Happy Thursday! Today I'm sharing five books I said I would read by the end of 2020... and didn't. I have no excuse and I'm creating this post, sharing my broken promise, so I can be held accountable and actually get to reading!

Have you read any of these? What are your thoughts?

Five Dark Fates by Kendare Blake

After the grim confrontation with Queen Katharine, the rebellion lies in tatters. Jules’s legion curse has been unbound, and it is up to Arsinoe to find a cure, even as the responsibility of stopping the ravaging mist lies heavy on her shoulders, and her shoulders alone. Mirabella has disappeared.

Katharine’s reign remains intact—for now. When Mirabella arrives, seemingly under a banner of truce, Katharine begins to yearn for the closeness that Mirabella and Arsinoe share. But as the two circle each other, the dead queens hiss caution—Mirabella is not to be trusted.

In this conclusion to the Three Dark Crowns series, three sisters will rise to fight as the secrets of Fennbirn’s history are laid bare. Allegiances will shift. Bonds will be tested. But the fate of the island lies in the hands of its queens. It always has.

This series started as a buddy read. I got through all of the books but this one because you know... life.

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell

Beth Fremont and Jennifer Scribner-Snyder know that somebody is monitoring their work e-mail. (Everybody in the newsroom knows. It's company policy.) But they can't quite bring themselves to take it seriously. They go on sending each other endless and endlessly hilarious e-mails, discussing every aspect of their personal lives.

Meanwhile, Lincoln O'Neill can't believe this is his job now—reading other people's e-mail. When he applied to be "internet security officer," he pictured himself building firewalls and crushing hackers—not writing up a report every time a sports reporter forwards a dirty joke.

When Lincoln comes across Beth's and Jennifer's messages, he knows he should turn them in. But he can't help being entertained—and captivated—by their stories.

By the time Lincoln realizes he's falling for Beth, it's way too late to introduce himself.

What would he say . . . ?

I think I hesitated to read this one because I've never read from this author before. And I'm afraid it's going to be too 'chick-lit-y' for me. I'm not a fan of chick lit anymore :( But this is sitting on my bookshelf, staring me in the face every day so...

Fury by Laurann Dohner

Ellie is horrified to discover the pharmaceutical company she works for is doing illegal experiments. Company scientists have spliced human and animal DNA, creating exotic new species. One such “experiment” captures her heart and she’ll do anything to save him—even if he hates her for it.

Fury has never known compassion or love. He’s spent his life in a cell, chained and abused by humans. The one woman he allowed himself to trust betrayed him. Now he’s free and set on vengeance. He vows to end her life but when she’s finally in his grasp, harming her is the last thing he wants to do to the sexy little human.

Fury can’t resist Ellie—the touch of her hands, her mouth on his skin, her body wrapped around his. He’s obsessed with the scent of his woman. And Ellie wants Fury—always has. She craves his big, powerful body and wants to heal his desolate heart.

But loving Fury is one thing…taming him is another.

I'm probably the only paranormal romance reader who hasn't read anything from this author. It's almost as bad as saying you've never read from JR Ward, amiright?! Well, I have read (and loved) Ward so I think (or at least I hope) I will love this author too. *fingers crossed*

Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron

Girls team up to overthrow the kingdom in this unique and powerful retelling of Cinderella from a stunning new voice that's perfect for fans of Dhonielle Clayton and Melissa Albert .

It's 200 years after Cinderella found her prince, but the fairy tale is over. Teen girls are now required to appear at the Annual Ball, where the men of the kingdom select wives based on a girl's display of finery. If a suitable match is not found, the girls not chosen are never heard from again.

Sixteen-year-old Sophia would much rather marry Erin, her childhood best friend, than parade in front of suitors. At the ball, Sophia makes the desperate decision to flee, and finds herself hiding in Cinderella's mausoleum. There, she meets Constance, the last known descendant of Cinderella and her step sisters. Together they vow to bring down the king once and for all--and in the process, they learn that there's more to Cinderella's story than they ever knew . . .

Okay, so I hesitated with this one because of the hype. When a book is hyped, I tend to not like it as much as others. Then came the mixed reviews. I've only read a few WLW books and I didn't exactly love them, so I'm really hoping that this one is as special as it is purported to be.

Dead Pretty by Samantha Towle

I'd once believed that nothing would equal the pain of losing my parents.
I was wrong.
I had barely even begun to process their deaths when it started.
The love notes, flowers, gifts … all anonymously left on my porch.
Then, I opened my door to a dead bird.
At first, I thought it had died naturally.
I knew that wasn’t the case when I found my neighbor’s cat the next day.
Then, the murders started.
The victims … women who looked eerily similar to me.
I had a stalker. A murderous one.
And I had no clue who he was.
He never showed me his face.
Not even when he carved his final message into me.
I survived that night. But my life was over. It had ended the moment Tobias Ripley’s infatuation with me began.
So, I changed my name and moved away.
Now, I live a life of solitude. I don’t make connections with anyone.
Until Jack Canti walks into my life with his sharp eyes and easy smiles.
Only Jack isn’t the man he says he is.
And when the murders start again, I’m left wondering if it’s a copycat.
Or worse …
What if Tobias wasn’t the real killer after all … and the murderer has been right here with me all along?

I'm worried that this one won't be as mysterious or as thrill-inducing as I'm hoping it will be. I guess I won't know until I read it though, right?

I'm giving myself unti the end of July 2023 to read these books.
Who's going to call me out if I don't?

I am a monster.

A ghoul. A demon. The bogeyman. I have been called all of them. Most creatures fear me, but humans are repulsed by me. They are terrified of me. They have created legends about me, ever since they became aware of my existence when the tear between our worlds grew and we—the monsters from their nightmares—flooded through in our droves.

There is only one human who isn’t afraid of me. The only one who matters. And I will destroy anyone who tries to hurt him or take him from me. Danny is mine.

For the first time in my unfathomably long life, I know what it means to want another so much that the thought of losing him threatens to ruin me. I will do anything to keep Danny with me for as long as I can have him—for as long as he is willing to stay by the side of an ancient, scarred creature with a voice so inhuman it has sent some mad.

For some reason, Danny loves my voice. For some reason, Danny loves me. And when we both decide that his natural human life is nowhere near enough time for us to have together, we go on a journey between worlds to the one place where we can do what it takes for us to be together forever.

My Two Cents

If I didn't already absolutely love Danny and Wyn, I would now. How adorable are these two? The love between them is surreal and I couldn't be happier for what they accomplished by the end of this story.

I'm not even going to get into what happened here. Just know that the love game is very strong within Wyn and Danny is still head over heels for his favorite monster.

I learned a bit about monster society, the beauty to be found beyond the tear, and that happy endings for these human/monster partnerships are truly possible.

If you've already fallen for these two, READ THIS BOOK!

Books That Didn't Make the Cut Pt.13

Hello hello! I'm back with some more books that didn't really work for me, but might be winners for you.

The Disappearance of Catherine Brodie by Grace Harper

My Rating - ★
Genre - Contemporary New Adult Romance

BLURB - Catherine Brodie has a happy life in Brighton, she has friends, a secret boyfriend and almost at the end of her law degree. However, everything changes when she reaches her twentieth birthday. She tells a white lie to get out of a family dinner to celebrate her birthday and sneaks off to a party. The repercussions upend her secure and stable life. Two weeks later, she attends the funeral of her brother and parents. Each birthday following sends Catherine into turmoil with more heartache and misery. There are those that wish her harm. Alexander Devlin was there the night of her birthday and by coincidence, he crosses paths with her every year. Catherine dismisses the coincidence, but her best friend Tara Adkins is convinced fate is throwing them together. The first novel of a new quartet that tells the story of Catherine Brodie and her struggle to come to terms with what she did that had far-reaching consequences. It is an epic tale of love, passion, and revenge. Devastated with her loss, Catherine carves out a new life and starting her own business. The group of friends she picks up along the way helps her hide from those who wish her harm. It doesn't take long for her harasser to find her and make her life a misery once more. The question is, will Alexander Devlin be there in time to save her?

Where do I even start?
The heroine was a mess. She was 20, living at home, and I'm guessing the story was supposed to have this 'coming of age' feel about it, but I didn't get any of that. All I got was an immature person who tried to act grown up and kept reverting to childhood. It was weird and I couldn't, in good conscience, continue. Nothing about this book appealed to me and I'm still a little upset by the many times it was recommended to me! It was so bad (for me) that I couldn't even give the hero or the romance a chance.

His Virgin by Vivian Wood

My Rating - ★
Genre - Contemporary Romance

BLURB - Whatever she wants, I want it ten times harder.
My name is Elijah Scott, and I’m going to be your next president. I’m a rich, ripped, and ready to conquer the campaign trail. When it comes to women, I’m not looking for anything serious. Not now, not ever.
Until I see Meredith.
The sweet little blonde with curves in all the right places. One look into those beautiful blue eyes, and I can’t help imagining how her hips would fit just right in my hands.
I’ll never forget the secret she whispers in my ear: she’s never been with anyone before. She’s a temptation I can’t resist.
She’s fresh out of college, just twenty-two years old and on the campaign trail with me… as a reporter. One leak exposed by Meredith, and my entire future goes up in flames.
As my secrets pile up, I can’t stop fantasizing about Meredith. She’s dangerous, a risk I can’t afford… but her taste, her voice moaning my name over and over… I can’t stop. Worse, I don’t want to watch her walk away.

You'd read that blurb and think hot and sexy too, right? Wrong!
Not hot. Not sexy. Not good. Not worth it.
Which sounds bad, but honest.
It was recommended on both Goodreads and Amazon, so I thought I'd try it.
My bad.

Nero by Sarah Brianne

My Rating - ★
Genre - Contemporary Mafia Romance

BLURB - Nero is the king of Legacy Prep, living a life of power.
Elle is the school’s punching bag, living a life of fear.
The only good girls Nero knows jump in his bed when he tells them to.
The closest Elle has come to a bad boy like him is in the cafeteria line.
The mob boss gave him orders to find out what she knows.
Her mouth is sealed.

Hey! Everyone who told me that because I love mafia romance, I'll love this series...

I can't unread what I've seen.

Why did this chick, Elle, do nothing to hold my attention?
She was completely flat. Aside from being bullied and protecting her friend from being bullied more, she didn't exist. She had no personality, no character, no depth. And you expect me to punish myself with more of this?

It was bad enough that this story is set in high school. It was even worse that the trope was so familiar to me (like I haven't read tons of stories with the EXACT same set up). But the fact that Elle was the primary storyteller...

Illicit Temptations

My Rating - ★★★★
Standalone - Tempted #1
Release - July 25, 2015
Genre/Trope - Contemporary Romance / mafia
POV - Dual 1st person (Michael Valente + Nikki Pastore)
Heat - 4 out of 5
Length - 367 pages

Broken, lost, and alone.
That's all I was before New York's most notorious gangster recruited me.
Now here I am, following in my father's footsteps and breaking my mother's heart.
And I'm torn between the only life I've ever known and the possibility of something else.
Because the only beacon of light in this dark world is the one woman I can't have.
The Boss's daughter.
The nightclub king's girl.
Her irresistible spirit struggling to be respected for who she is, and not just who she belongs to.
I see her. All of her.
She's the sweetest temptation I've ever known.
And the most illicit.

Nikki and Michael were very easy to like. She had a crush on him since they were kids and he quickly realized that the little girl he had left behind had grown up into a beautiful woman.

Nikki and Michael had oodles of chemistry. Too bad she had a boyfriend. And while she had a connection to her boyfriend, especially because he didn't seem to be intimidated by her father, the mafia don of New York, what she felt for Michael was beyond compare.

I lived for every illicit look.
Every illicit thought.
And all of their illicit touches!

Michael was hilarious and it really shone through on their trip to Florida to escape a threat against Nikki's father. I laughed so much picturing him trying to escape elderly advances.

I knew loving these characters would be easy because I went into this already knowing who they were. I guess that's the consequence of reading the Nomad series before diving into the original stories. However, I have no regrets because it only made me enjoy these people more. I adored getting this in-depth look at the way love bloomed between Nikki and her Mikey, and also the glimpses shown of Victor Pastore, Anthony Bianci, Adrianna, etc.

Forbidden Temptations by Janine Infante Bosco

Forbidden Temptations

My Rating - ★★★★
Standalone - Tempted #2
Release - November 10, 2015
Genre/Trope - Contemporary Romance / mafia / second chance
POV - Dual 1st person (Anthony Bianci + Adrianna Pastore)
Heat - 4 out of 5
Length - 305 pages

Respect. Power. Control.
From the time I was a boy that was all I wanted.
Being an enforcer for the mob gave me all of that and more.
But she gave me things I didn’t even know I could have.
Passion. Love. Hope.
I was never supposed to fall for her.
I was only good to take the fall for a crime I didn’t commit.
What use is power when you’re locked inside a cage?
I pushed her away and spared her the pain of this poisonous life.
Now, I’m free and she’s still the forbidden temptation.
The one I crave more than air.
More than respect.
More than power.
More than anything.

Anthony was such an intriguing character. He put on this disguise of being lethal and cold, but dude was swimming in so much heart. Everything he was or ever could be centered around Adrianna, and this lady knew her man. When he pushed, she pushed back. And when he pulled her in, she went willingly. There was so much back and forth in their relationship, that if you're not careful, you'll get whiplash. Outside forces were the primary reasons for why this couple had such a hard time, but Anthony didn't try to make things any easier. While all she wanted was him, he was constantly worried about the danger being with him would cause.

However, when he finally decided to fight for what was rightfully his, when he finally claimed his woman... everybody needed to get out of this man's way. I loved everything he did to finally give Adrianna the happily ever after she deserved.

The only drawback to this story was the way that Victor Pastore was portrayed. He went from beloved father to a monster and it threw me. At least some peace was made in the end. I'm here for the ride and it only seems to be getting bumpier. Don't even get me started on the whole Jimmy Gold situation. I can't wait for all of the fallout!!

Uncontrollable Temptations by Janine Infante Bosco

Uncontrollable Temptations

My Rating - ★★★★½
Standalone - Tempted #3
Release - January 1, 2016
Genre/Trope - Contemporary Romance / MC Romance
POV - Dual 1st person (Jack 'Bullog' Parrish + Reina)
Heat - 4 out of 5
Length - 202 pages

Crazy. Deranged. Uncontrollable.
Doctor it up all you want, no formal diagnosis erases the stigma associated with mental illness.
It’s a scar I’ve carried most of my life.
A hell I can’t escape.
I’m the president of the Satan’s Knights Motorcycle Club with enemies near and far.
But the real villain in this story is my mind.
Drowning in darkness, demons and shadows are all I know.
Until one day the sun begins to shine.
She’s broken, just a shell of a woman, but she’s a beautiful, bright light beckoning me home.
Saving me from the torment.
Showing me her own scars.
Healing me.
Loving me.
Shining her light.
An uncontrollable temptation I can’t resist.

Jack and Reina were two people who knew what it was to exist without living. Both were drowning in pain and breathed life into each other. I was already quite familiar with Jack's pain because I've been Property of Parrish for years, but seeing it mirrored a bit in Reina was a new experience. And although I walked, ran and swam in their deep love for one another some time ago, it was so sweet to see where it all started.

Jack was as crazy as ever. I really cannot get enough of this man! The Satan's Knights were looking for justice and sometimes that looks very ugly. Lives were at stake and no one was safe. I was just excited to see a certain someone get his.

This story was full of feels and angst and further cemented my love for all of these characters.

Reckless Temptations

My Rating - ★★★★½
Standalone - Tempted #4
Release - March 5, 2016
Genre - Contempoary Romance / MC Romance
POV - Dual 1st person (Robert 'Riggs' Montgomery + Lauren Bianci)
Heat - 4 out of 5

Heart.
It keeps you alive, but it can make you a fool too.
I tied mine to the club and nothing else.
I didn’t need more.
The Satan’s Knights gave me a reason to ride and secured my place in the world.
I also had a rotation of women at my beck and call—life was good.
Until one night.
One doe-eyed girl.
Little miss innocent wanted to ride in the fast lane and I was the badass with the bike.
A temptation I couldn’t resist.
If there was ever a reason to be reckless and risk my heart, she was it.

No one can deny Riggs his heart. Well, maybe he could. However, no matter how many times he tried to talk himself out of love, it kept hitting him in the face.

Riggs knew that Lauren was off limits. He may lust after her non-stop, but no way did he want to tangle with the Biancis. And then one night changes everything. One taste and he can't help but come back for more. Separation anxiety, dangers lurking around every corner, and a surprise pregnancy lead Riggs to find his heart once and for all.

Each Satan's Knight has something different to offer. Riggs' contribution: ridiculousness. Dude could find humor at a funeral. He made me laugh with all of his hilarious inner monologues. I loved seeing events from past books from his perspective. His view of how things went down gave certain scenes a different edge, whether it was to make me laugh, cringe or cry.

The hospital scenes absolutely GUTTED me!!

All this to say that this is book 4 of the series and I'm still very much entrenched with the Knights and I'm greedy for more.

Lethal Temptations by Janine Infante Bosco

Lethal Temptations

My Rating - ★★★★
Standalone - Tempted #5
Release - May 24, 2016
Genre - Contemporary Romance / MC romance / forbidden / age gap
POV - Dual 1st person (Dominic 'Blackie' Petra + Lacey Parrish)
Heat - 4 out of 5
Length - 530 pages

Drugs. Alcohol. Mayhem.
That's how I ride as the VP of the Satan's Knights MC.
I trade one addiction for another and make no apologies.
I'm no Knight in shining armor. I'm Satan's soldier, a villain dressed in leather.
She's a beautiful, broken angel, wrapped in lace battling her own demons.
And when she looks at me, I'm not a man chained to his cravings and crimes.
I'm her hero and she's my sweetest obsession.
A lethal temptation I can't resist.
The one I won't survive.

I knew all about Blackie and Lacey from reading the Blackout duet, but seeing where it all began was a nice detour (thinking of you, Riggs). I got to see how the whole Leather and Lace deal got started and their story was darker than all the rest. It was full of inner angst and outer dangers. With Lacey struggling with her mental illness and trying to be seen, to be heard... this young woman broke my heart. And Blackie was struggling with his many addictions. However, they were each other's rocks. They were the one person they could be real with, the person who could really see them.

I still find this relationship a bit icky. Remember, Blackie is Jack's bestie and Lacey is Jack's daughter. Blackie has been a part of her life since she was a little girl. Whenever the hero watches the heroine grow up and then falls for her, I'm always a bit thrown. But the author pulls it off. I wasn't grossed out (completely) and I found it easy to get on board with idea of this couple's happily ever after. They fought hard for it and they earned it. Painful and beautiful, their story was a treat to read.

Eternal Temptations by Janine Infante Bosco

Eternal Temptations

My Rating - ★★★★½
Standalone - Tempted #6
Release - August 1, 2016
Genre - Contemporary Romance / extended epilogue
POV - Multiple 1st person
Heat- 4 out of 5
Length - 294 pages

You've seen them through their most illicit temptations.
Guided them through their forbidden temptations.
Stuck with them through their uncontrollable temptations.
Owned their reckless temptations.
And survived their lethal temptations.
Five couples.
One threat.
Who will overcome the eternal temptation?

Join The Pastore Crime Family and the Satan's Knights MC in this mashup standalone romantic thriller. One final hit. One last ride. And these anti-heroes won't go down without a fight.
So ask yourself: are you tempted?

This was so much fun to read! It was like getting extended epilogues for my favorite characters and I'm still looking for more!

Eternal Temptations was full of pain, death (OMG the deaths were crazy in this book), remembrances, honorable mentions, beauty, family, and so much love. The love these characters have for one another, especially when it started (for some) from a place of misgivings... it's the stuff that makes these characters legendary. There's a reason why their stories crossover into other books and into other series. They are just that amazing!

When you fall in love with Michael + Nikki, Anthony + Adrianna, Jack + Reina, Riggs + Lauren, Blackie + Lacie, and even Grace + Victor, you'll want to make sure you read this book. It delivers in so many ways, and if that wasn't enough, it sets up the next series for the nomads. So freaking good!

When a strange woman shows up outside our camp in the Wastes with monsters chained up to her RV, it feels like I’m the only one who actually wants to help them.

That big, grey-skinned monster with the cage on his head and the chain hanging from his back—something is telling me I need to help him. I need to free him. But I have absolutely no idea how I’m supposed to do that, especially when he can’t even talk to me to tell me how.

Collector Mary is finally leaving our camp to head back to her monster menagerie, so I do the only thing I can think of to help him. I go with her.

Now, this big beastie and I are traveling companions for the foreseeable future. Now I just have to think of a way to get that cage off his head, which seems like an impossible task. But I’m not giving up. He has no one else, and when I start to discover who he is beneath the cage, my motivation to free him becomes far more than just a desire to help.

This is so dangerous. The military is lurking. Vicious monsters are lurking. And when Mary turns out to be even worse than we could have ever imagined, my desperate bid to save this monster turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse.

I’m pretty sure I’m going to die out here.

My Two Cents

I don’t know how it happened, but this became my favorite book of the series. While I still very much love Wyn and Edin and Aury… Gloam and Adam are in a league of their own. It could be due to the purity of their hearts, the utter lengths they would go to for each other, how they just fit… Honestly, it was a mix of things that made them the most glorious couple in the monster-verse.

You are very brave, Adam.

Gloam was beholden to a terrible woman (I’m looking at you, Mary, you truly despicable woman) for reasons unknown. Rig was determined to free him, despite the misgivings of others in his camp. This young man, who was completely terrified of being “out there”, thought nothing of leaving his relatively safe life behind to help Gloam. He knew this monster was in trouble and he was just the person to fix things for him. And what grew between them, slowly but surely, became something truly beautiful.

Word of warning: this book was probably the filthiest of the bunch. It was definitely not safe to read around people. I gasped and choked quite a bit. I loved every minute of it!!

In the end, I’ve got so many questions and I hope things become much clearer in the books to come.
➤ What is up with Seraph? Dude has many eyes… I don’t know how I’m going to be able to humanize him. I won’t lie, it’s been easy to see the attraction with the monsters so far, despite them having black tipped fingers and turning into mist, being purple with horns, or having wings and birdlike feet (and being able to transform into a true monster). But for a rabid monster with a ton of eyes… I can’t see it… yet.
➤ So it seems like Edin was rolling up on the camp? Good thing or bad?
➤ Will Mary’s journals have viable information that can help Seraph? Otherwise, how are he and Lilac going to get their HEA? Yes, I’m already shipping them!
➤ Speaking of Lilac, did something happen to him to turn him into a silent killer? He seems to have deep emotions so I’m curious to see his backstory in his story to come.

She enjoys reading and writing (duh), cooking and baking, watching terrible horror movies and many other hobbies that would have potentially made her an ideal Victorian maid. Just a really lazy one.

Romily:
You know what I’d like to know? Where the hell my romantic, how-we-got-engaged story is. Am I going to get it any time soon? Where is my bigass diamond?

Unfortunately, all that relationship angst gets put on hold when my beloved son, Bellamy, is abducted by a werewolf-ish person I kinda like. Am I going to get my kid back? You betcha. The question is, how many people does Fox have to kill first?

The Trouble With Trying to Save an Assassin is the second book in the Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees Series. It's a 60k word M/M Paranormal Romance with plenty of sass, gore, and questionable decision-making skills, and now there are tiny tables too.

The Trouble With Trying to Save an Assassin by Jennifer Cody

My Two Cents

Could Romily get any more ridiculous? Why yes, yes he could!

My new favorite threesome were getting along quite nicely for the most part. Romily was still waiting for his engagement ring, Fox was still killing those who needed killing, and Bellamy had come to accept that these two men… this strange couple… were now his people.

Then Bellamy gets kidnapped and all hell breaks loose.

There’s a burning man, an assassin who can’t really be killed, the four dads, a messed up council, some intriguing inner workings for the paranormal world these characters are occupying, and a lot of tomfoolery going on.

Once again, I had a blast reading this. This author is a definite must-buy for me from now on. There was a delicate balance between the humor and the awesomeness and not once did it get overly ridiculous or OTT for me. I enjoyed every bit of it and I’m waiting for Romily to get his diamond!!

The Author

Jennifer Cody lives in Small Midwestern Town, USA, aka the sticks of Kansas.
She has three kids and a Beardo she loves.
Her sleep schedule is weird, so messages sent at midnight usually get answered relatively promptly.
She reads all kinds of mm romance and urban fantasy, but her favorites are gay-for-you, small-town romances and over the top urban fantasy romances.
Her own writing doesn’t always reflect her reading preferences, but mostly it does. She writes what she wants to read and reads extensively because she’s an addict. To books, obviously. And caffeine because sleep is for other people.
