Garrett's Destiny by Rebecca Zanetti
My Rating - ★★★★★
Standalone - Dark Protectors #15
Genre/Trope - Paranormal Romance / fated mates
POV - Multiple 3rd person

Length - 336 pages
Love and danger . . .
For most of his life, Vampire-Demon Garrett Kayrs, nephew of the King of the Realm, has carried a heavy mantle of responsibility with ease and control. Fate declared him heir to the throne, Fortune marked him with the power of the mysterious circle of Seven, and Chance promised more surprises to come. Nothing deterred him from his path. Until the nightmares began—agonizing dreams of having a female, the female, his mate, on the back of his motorcycle—only to have her torn away from his protection. He feels the menace around her, the danger she’s in, and he can’t rest until he finds her . . .
Duty and desire . . .
Destiny Applegate bears the weight of her name with a respectful balance of fear and purpose. She has been given some direction, but not nearly enough to truly understand her duty, what she was born to do. Even as a child, she had a sense of him. The him, her mate. A dream moment or two with him that might have saved her—or possibly cursed her. So now, when he finds her, she has no choice but to jump on the back of his bike and do her best to hold on until she discovers her path—even if that means ending his.

My Two Cents
For years, Garrett dreamed of his fated mate. He was told and shown that his female would try to kill him. So why does his mind, heart and body yearn for the pretty little package that Destiny presents. She was the furthest thing from dangerous and all he wanted to do was bundle her up and protect her.
What happens when forces beyond their control force them to confront the truth?
Garrett Karys was a good man. Or male. He was strong and sure, and he loved his family. There was a gentleness about him that called to her, but if she were honest, it was the edge in him that made her knees weak. The hint of danger and the whisper of violence, both of which she knew he'd never use on her.
Each one of these books brings me closer and closer to the final showdown with the Kurjans, the Cyst, and my favorite immortal heroes. With Garrett's Destiny, I wasn't just on the precipice of the big fight, I was quickly caught up in the middle of it. It was just there and I. Was. Not. Prepared!!
I loved how every chapter seemed to take me in a new direction. One minute I'd be enjoying the growth of the bond growing between Garrett and Destiny, the next I was watching someone killing or dying. There was plenty of romance and action and the author created a fine balance. I still can't get over one of the deaths in this book and I'm excited to see how it factors in the book to come.
Destiny was so much more than expected and I loved how her character had so many layers. Garrett was obviously my favorite in this book (as all the heroes are in their books), but I definitely developed a soft spot for his lady.
There is a HUGE twist in this story and I'm both eager and terrified to read Hope's book, which is next. If you haven't started this series yet, you need to start already!!

As you know, not every book I read will get 4 or 5 stars. Here are a few that I still enjoyed!
Wretched by Emily McIntire
My Rating - ★★★
Genre/Trope - Contemporary Romance / retelling
POV - Dual 1st person
Heat - more than descriptive, less than explicit
Source - borrowed from Kindle Unlimited
Length - 282 pages
Wretched was a play on the Wizard of Oz, but I didn’t really SEE it. Ah well, no matter. I enjoyed it just the same.
What I liked:
* Evelina being the ‘bad guy’ made me smile. I loved that the woman was the one causing trouble, being on the wrong side of the law, ruling from the shadows. It gave this story a unique twist.
* The whole enemies-to-lovers and forbidden vibes of this story kept me engaged with the plot. I’m a sucker for a protective hero and while Nicholas was undercover in this crime family, his true nature always had a way of shining through.
However, as much as I enjoyed this book, I was also bored. I skimmed through a lot of it. So please take my rating with a grain of salt.
If I’m her calm, then she is my chaos, and if I can’t live with her forever, then I don’t want to live at all.
The Fae King's Curse by Jamie Schlosser
My Rating - ★★★
Genre/Trope - Fantasy Romance / fated mates
POV - Dual 1st person
Heat - descriptive

Length - 281 pages
For the most part, I loved this book. However… the setup of Quinn fighting against Kirian’s declared feelings turned me off from pretty much the start. I found it hard to get on board with their happy ending when for so much of this book, Quinn was being silly. You’re in love with the man. He’s already proven that he doesn’t care about the curse because he chose you. Why then hurt him by denying him what you both want?
I wasn’t trying to read a children’s book.
If it weren’t for Kirian and his cousins and all of their awesomeness, I don’t think I would have enjoyed this story as much.
Kudos to the author for writing in this subgenre and allowing me to enjoy the world created. Will I read the next book? Ummm yeah because I really need to see Damon get some!

For Christiano, With Hate by Soraya Naomi
My Rating - ★★★
Genre/Trope - Contemporary Romance / mafia / arranged marriage
POV - Dual 1st person
Heat - more than descriptive, less than explicit
Source - eARC provided by the author
Length - approx. 250 pages
Teagan has stepped into it. Now that she knows of her best friend’s connection to the Syndicate, she has to either step up or… So while she wants no part of any of it, she agrees to be married to Christiano, the Syndicate’s assassin. He wants this marriage as much as she does—which is none at all. Off to a bad start, he barely spends time with her, she tries to gain his attention through passive-aggressive means, and nothing seems to get done. When they finally do make an effort, that’s when the magic happens.
I’ve loved the Chicago Syndicate series from the beginning and I loved seeing all of the characters I fell in love with sprinkled throughout this story. I enjoyed seeing some of them take big roles in the plot (looking at you Luca and Henry!). I failed to connect with the main characters and it mostly boiled down to Teagan and her childish behavior. I kept having to remind myself that she was 30 years old because she was very OTT and out of control. She made rash decisions, she constantly challenged when it wasn’t necessary, and her irrational thoughts drove me mad.
Most of my frustration came from the fact that these characters lacked emotional depth. I knew very little about what drove them to be the way they were. I didn’t know what motivated or inspired them. Aside from Christiano’s revelation about his parents’ death and Teagan’s mention of not knowing her father and having a distant relationship with her mother, there wasn’t much else to learn. I knew so many details about the individual items Teagan and Christiano would wear though. I’d take emotional growth over superficial details any day.
Overall, I had a blast hanging out with some of my favorite people and I’m a bit sad knowing that this will probably be the last book for them. I’ll miss the drama, the action, and the sense of family these characters engender the most.
The Syndicate, once a shadowy organization, has transformed into a haven of love, acceptance, and unbreakable bonds.
If she took his hand, life as she knew it would never be the same.

The lone wolf answers to no alpha or pack. From his first transformation, he knows his destiny: to be both judge and executioner for rogue werewolves. Welcome to the spellbinding first book in New York Times bestselling author N.J. Walters intense new werewolf series.
White wolf Devlin Moore has spent nearly the last century following his destiny: hunting rogue werewolves. His fate is to be the only one of his kind—hardened, feared, and brutally ruthless. Only now, Devlin’s not alone. There are two others. And if that wasn’t unsettling enough, Devlin is drawn to New York City for what appears to be a human…
As far as Devlin can tell, vibrant artist Zoe Galvani is no threat. But there’s something about her— from her unusual eyes that look similar to the same shocking hue as his own, to his growing need to mark her as his that suggests magical forces may be at play.
Now there’s no escaping each other, or the attraction that grows stronger by the second. But no one, especially a human woman, should have this effect on a lone wolf. And just when he’s sure that having her could be his undoing…the truth steps out of the shadows.

My Two Cents
After falling in love with the heroes of The Forgotten Brotherhood (and seriously, if you haven't read that series, START NOW), I knew that N.J. Walters was an author I had to read EVERYTHING from. Knowing there was a new series coming, I had to get my hands on the first book and Taming the White Wolf did not disappoint!
As the white wolf, Devlin leads a very lonely existence. He's an immortal, the one responsible for taking out rogue wolves, and he is either feared or challenged at every turn. When Zoe, a human whose coloring is too close to his to be a coincidence, is thrust into his path, Devlin soon learns that magic is at play and life as he knows it will never be the same.
I loved how authentic these characters felt, despite the otherworldly circumstances. They knew they were manipulated by magic, but trusted their hearts and their feelings. They fought for and protected each other. The love developed quickly, but in a way that seemed organic to the high intensity of the situation that bound them together.
As part of the worldbuilding for this story, Devlin reveals that there is usually only one lone immortal wolf. However, when he was 'borne', two others joined him—one black and one grey. There seems to be some inherent mistrust between them, but I'm hoping that changes, especially as the series continues.
All I know is that I'm thankful for the happy for now ending, but eager to get my hands on the books to come.
The Author
Once upon a time N.J. had the idea that she would like to quit her job at the bookstore, sell everything she owned, leave her hometown, and write romance novels in a place where no one knew her. And she did. Two years later, she went back to the bookstore and her hometown and settled in for another seven years.
One day she gave notice at her job on a Friday morning. On Sunday afternoon, she received a tentative acceptance for her first romance novel and life would never be the same.
N.J. Walters is a New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author who has always been a voracious reader, and now she spends her days writing novels of her own. Vampires, werewolves, dragons, time-travelers, seductive handymen, and next-door neighbors with smoldering good looks—all vie for her attention. It’s a tough life, but someone’s got to live it.
